Sole
| The rubber waffle sole has been used since VANS was founded in 1966. It got its name because it's made by molding rubber into a waffle-like grid pattern. Heel
| The heel features VANS' familiar red logo with "OFF THE WALL" engraved on a skateboard. While "OFF THE WALL" literally means "away from the wall," in the context of VANS, it refers to American slang meaning "unconventional" or "breaking the mold." In the 1970s, when VANS sponsored the skater group Z-BOYS, legendary Z-BOYS skater Tony Alva performed a trick where he launched into the air from the edge of a pool. The Z-BOYS' owner, amazed, yelled "OFF THE WALL! (You're unconventional!)" This exclamation became a symbolic phrase in skater culture. Given that VANS at the time operated with an unconventional business model of custom-made orders, "OFF THE WALL" became the brand's catchphrase and continues to be used in its logos and product names to this day. |

VANS | What is VANS?
| A sneaker brand founded in 1966 in Anaheim, California, USA, by Paul Van Doren and three partners, under a name meaning "Van and friends." Initially, they operated on a made-to-order basis, creating the first model, now called the Authentic, on the same day an order was placed and handing it directly to customers at the store. In the 1970s, the rubber waffle sole, which had been used since the company's inception, began to gain popularity among skaters due to its grip, and members of the legendary skater group Z-BOYS became fans. They successively created masterpieces that continue to this day, such as the Era, Old Skool, Sk8-Hi, and Slip-On, and by the end of the 1970s, they had opened approximately 70 shops across California. Despite strong sales of their main products, rapid store expansion and an excessive product variety led to increasing debt. Although they faced bankruptcy in 1984, a reconstruction plan was approved, and after founder Paul Van Doren returned as president, he managed to pay off 12 million dollars in debt within three years without compromising shoe quality, starting fresh. Afterward, business performance again declined due to failed diversification, and despite twists and turns including falling under the umbrella of major apparel manufacturer VF Corporation, they achieved a miraculous V-shaped recovery by focusing on their core shoe business. Though their journey was far from smooth sailing, they rose each time they hit rock bottom. Starting with skateboarding, they grew into a global brand by linking with various cultures such as music, fashion, and art, and continue to be loved across generations as they approach their 60th anniversary. |
