Sole

Heel
| The heel features VANS' familiar red logo with "OFF THE WALL" emblazoned on a skateboard. "OFF THE WALL" literally means "away from the wall," but in the context of VANS, it refers to American slang meaning "unconventional" or "out of the ordinary." In the 1970s, when VANS sponsored the legendary skater group Z-BOYS, the legendary Z-BOYS skater Tony Alva pulled off a trick leaping into the air from the poolside wall. The Z-BOYS' owner, praising him, shouted, "OFF THE WALL! (You're unconventional!)" This incident led to the phrase becoming a symbolic term in skater culture. At the time, VANS' business style was also unconventional, with everything made to custom order. This led to "OFF THE WALL" becoming the brand's catchphrase, and it has continued to be used in logos and product names to this day. |

VANS | About Vans
| Founded in 1966 in Anaheim, California, USA, by Paul Van Doren and three partners, the sneaker brand was named after "Van and his buddies." Initially, they operated on a completely made-to-order basis, creating their first model, now known as the Authentic, on the same day an order was placed and delivering it directly to customers at the store. In the 1970s, the rubber waffle sole, used since the company's founding, began to gain popularity among skaters due to its excellent grip, and members of the legendary Z-BOYS skater group also became fans. Vans successively produced masterpieces that continue to this day, such as the Era, Old Skool, Sk8-Hi, and Slip-On, and by the beginning of the 1980s, they had opened approximately 70 stores within California. However, despite strong sales of their main products, rapid store expansion and excessive product variation led to increasing debt. Although they filed for bankruptcy in 1984, a reconstruction plan was approved, and founder Paul Van Doren returned as president. Without compromising shoe quality, he repaid $12 million in debt within three years, marking a new beginning. Afterward, business performance deteriorated again due to failures in business diversification, and despite various twists and turns, including becoming part of the major apparel manufacturer VF Corporation, they achieved another miraculous V-shaped recovery by focusing on their core shoe business. Though their journey was far from smooth, they rose each time they hit rock bottom. Starting with skateboarding, they grew into a global brand by linking with various cultures such as music, fashion, and art, and continue to be loved across generations even as they celebrate their 60th anniversary. |
