History
| Russell was started in 1902 by Benjamin Russell in Alexander City, Alabama, USA. In the early 1920s, Russell created the world's first prototype sweatshirt, and in 1938, developed the world's first rubber print (the prototype of modern American rubber prints). Using this technology, Russell then popularized sweatshirts with school names and logos at schools, colleges, and university bookstores across the United States. In the 1980s and 90s, Russell entered into supplier contracts with professional sports leagues in the US (NFL, MLB), establishing Russell's "R" mark (Eagle-R) throughout the nation. This is why it's often said that "Americans unconsciously have Russell apparel in their closets." |
